The Road Less Traveled

Hello, I'm Erica Asbury, the founder of Village Academy San Diego. My educational background might have been conventional—completing a Business Degree at San Diego State University on a full scholarship and later earning a Masters of Accountancy—but my vision for education is anything but.

Like many parents, I found myself disenchanted with the mainstream educational choices available for my children. The school system had evolved, but not in ways that catered to the unique gifts and challenges every child brings to the classroom. I saw my own son struggle and felt the sinking feeling of his lost passion for learning. It became clear that a change was needed—a fundamental shift in how we approach education.

The Dream Takes Shape

While homeschooling, I discovered the transformative power of learner-driven education. Here was my son, once reluctant to write, now jotting down business plans and passionately researching topics he loved. This was the education I had always envisioned: one that is self-paced, collaborative, and taps into the innate curiosity all children possess.

That's when the dream solidified, and Village Academy San Diego was born.

That's why each unit culminates in an exhibition where students share their projects and acquired knowledge, proudly showcasing not just what they've learned but who they've become in the process.
